Every year Pantone releases a colour for the year, and this year is no exception.
The company announced recently that Living Coral, a bright coral shade, is its 2019 Colour of the Year. Although it may appear more pink, Pantone describes Living Coral as “an animated, life-affirming shade of orange, with golden undertones.”
The 2018 colour was Ultra Violet, a deep purple hue.
The decision for 2020’s Colour of the Year is up to the Pantone Color Institute, Pantone’s consulting division that analyses each year’s colour trends. They pay particular attention to the colours that have appeared in branding efforts by multiple companies. Pantone pointed to the might of Airbnb and Apple’s use of coral over the past few months as a sign of the colour’s domination.
Pantone referred to Living Coral as a colour with carefree happiness. A press release says it “symbolises our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits”—a feeling that, perhaps, people might be craving in today’s landscape.
Keep an eye out in marketing campaigns this year and you might just see it making an appearance.
